What is a VIN number?
The VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is a unique 17-character code the manufacturer assigns to every vehicle. The ISO 3779 standard rules out the letters I, O and Q, because they could be mistaken for the digits 1 and 0. No two vehicles in the world share a VIN, which makes it the most reliable way to confirm a vehicle identity.
Characters 1–3: manufacturer (WMI)
The first three characters say who built the vehicle and in which country. For example, WVW stands for Volkswagen, Germany.
Characters 4–9: vehicle description (VDS)
This part describes the model, body type, engine and restraint system. The ninth character is a check digit used to verify that the VIN is genuine.
Characters 10–17: identification (VIS)
The tenth character marks the model year, the eleventh the assembly plant, and the last six are the vehicle serial number on the production line.
Because the VIN belongs to the vehicle and not to the owner or the number plate, it stays the same after a sale, a transfer or a change of plates.
Where do I find the VIN number?
The VIN appears in several places on a vehicle. If those places do not match, treat it as a serious warning sign.
Bottom edge of the windscreen
On the driver side there is a small plate under the glass showing the VIN, readable from outside the vehicle.
Driver door frame (B-pillar)
Open the driver door and look for the sticker or plate on the pillar or on the edge of the door.
Engine bay or chassis
Manufacturers also stamp the VIN into the body – often under the bonnet, in the boot beneath the spare wheel, or on the chassis.
Vehicle registration document
The registration document lists the VIN in field E. You will also find it on the insurance policy and on service invoices.

Which vehicles you can check
Our database holds data for vehicles registered in Slovenia between 2014 and 2023. If a vehicle was not in the Slovenian records during that period, we cannot produce a report for it.
