When the code is set
The ECM turns the camshaft through the oil control valve and uses the crankshaft and camshaft sensors to check that the actual position matches the requested one. If the camshaft is further advanced than it should be, or does not respond, it stores P0011.
Can I keep driving?
Have it checked soon
Check the oil level first. If the engine is quiet and runs normally, you can drive gently to a garage, but no further. If the engine rattles, runs unevenly or stalls, or the oil pressure warning light is on, do not drive on and have the car recovered, because a timing fault can damage the engine.
Symptoms
- The check engine light is on.
- Rough idle.
- Hard starting or stalling.
- Jerking and less power.
- Rattling from the timing chain area.
- Higher fuel consumption.
Common causes
- Low oil, or old, dirty oil.
- Oil of the wrong viscosity.
- A faulty or blocked oil control valve, or its wiring.
- A sticking camshaft adjuster.
- A stretched timing chain or a worn tensioner.
- Low oil pressure.
How to find the cause
A mechanic usually works like this:
- Read all codes and check whether P0010, P0012 or P0016 are stored too.
- Check the oil level, viscosity and condition.
- Test the oil control valve and its wiring.
- Measure the oil pressure.
- Check the timing chain or belt and the tensioner.
Other ways the code is written
Scan tools and workshop printouts sometimes show the code with extra characters:
- P001100

Evoca fault code diagnostics is an informational aid and does not replace a professional inspection of your vehicle. Only an inspection of the vehicle at a workshop can confirm the cause of a fault.
