When the code is set
The boost pressure sensor sends the ECM a voltage that changes with pressure. If that voltage is higher than the range the sensor can send when working properly, for example because of a broken or shorted wire, the ECM stores P0238.
Can I keep driving?
Have it checked soon
The car usually still drives, possibly with less power. Drive gently and have it checked soon, because without a correct pressure reading the ECM cannot control the turbocharger properly.
Symptoms
- The check engine light is on.
- Reduced power or limp mode.
- Poorer acceleration.
Common causes
- Poor contact or corrosion in the sensor connector.
- A broken or shorted wire to the sensor.
- A faulty boost pressure sensor.
- A blocked sensor port.
- The engine control module (rare).
How to find the cause
A mechanic usually works like this:
- Read all codes and freeze frame data.
- Inspect the sensor connector and wiring.
- Measure the sensor supply and signal and compare them with the specified values.
- With the engine off, compare the sensor reading with the other pressure sensors.
Other ways the code is written
Scan tools and workshop printouts sometimes show the code with extra characters:
- P023800
