When the code is set
The ECM or the glow plug control unit monitors voltage and current in the glow plug circuit. If the voltage is higher or lower than expected, for example because of a broken wire or a burnt-out plug, it stores P0380.
Can I keep driving?
Have it checked soon
Once the engine is running, you can usually keep driving. Have the fault fixed soon, especially before winter: the longer the code stays active, the greater the chance that the engine will not start in the cold.
Symptoms
- The check engine light or the glow plug light is on.
- Hard starting in the cold, especially after a cold night.
- Sometimes the code is stored with no noticeable symptoms.
Common causes
- A blown circuit fuse.
- One or more faulty glow plugs – the most common cause.
- A faulty glow plug relay or control unit.
- Damaged wiring or connectors.
- The engine control module (very rare).
How to find the cause
A mechanic usually works like this:
- Read all codes and check the circuit fuse.
- Test the glow plug relay or control unit.
- Inspect the wiring and the connectors on the plugs.
- Measure the resistance of each glow plug; a plug with an open circuit has failed.
Other ways the code is written
Scan tools and workshop printouts sometimes show the code with extra characters:
- P038000
