When the code is set
The gearbox control module monitors shaft speeds, pressure, fluid temperature and the operation of the solenoid valves. When it detects a fault, it stores its own code and tells the engine control module to turn on the light. The engine control module then stores P0700.
Can I keep driving?
Have it checked soon
If the gearbox changes gear normally, you can drive gently to a garage. At the first sign of shifting problems, stop driving. If the gearbox is in limp mode or slipping, do not drive on; have the car recovered.
Symptoms
- The check engine light is on, sometimes with a gearbox warning too.
- Harsh or delayed gear changes.
- Gearbox slipping: revs rise but the car does not accelerate.
- Limp mode: the gearbox stays in one gear.
- Jerking or stalling.
Common causes
- Low or old gearbox fluid.
- Damaged wiring or connector between the gearbox and the control module.
- A faulty gearbox solenoid valve.
- A fault in the valve body.
- A faulty gearbox control module.
- Internal gearbox wear.
How to find the cause
A mechanic usually works like this:
- Use a diagnostic tool to read the codes in the gearbox control module, not just the engine.
- Check the gearbox fluid level and condition.
- Review the freeze frame data.
- Compare input and output shaft speeds, and check the wiring and valves.
Other ways the code is written
Scan tools and workshop printouts sometimes show the code with extra characters:
- P070000

Evoca fault code diagnostics is an informational aid and does not replace a professional inspection of your vehicle. Only an inspection of the vehicle at a workshop can confirm the cause of a fault.
