P0101 code: mass air flow (MAF) sensor out of range

Fault code P0101 means the mass air flow (MAF) sensor is reporting values that do not match what the engine control module expects. Often the sensor is not broken but dirty, or air is getting into the engine past it. A wrong reading upsets the fuel calculation, so the engine runs worse.

Check P0101

When the code is set

The ECM compares the MAF sensor signal with other data, such as engine speed, throttle position and intake manifold pressure. If the signal is higher or lower than it should be under those conditions, it stores P0101.

Can I keep driving?

Have it checked soon

An air flow measurement fault does not usually stop the car straight away, so you can drive gently to a garage. Have it checked soon, though, because the wrong mixture increases fuel consumption and puts strain on the engine. If the engine stalls while driving, do not drive on.

Symptoms

  • The check engine light is on.
  • Unstable idle.
  • Less power when accelerating.
  • The engine starts and then dies, or stalls while driving.
  • Higher fuel consumption.

Common causes

  • A dirty mass air flow sensor.
  • A clogged or badly seated air filter.
  • A cracked hose between the sensor and the throttle body.
  • An air leak into the intake or a crankcase ventilation (PCV) fault.
  • Damaged sensor wiring or connector.
  • A faulty mass air flow sensor.
  • A blocked catalytic converter restricting exhaust flow.

How to find the cause

A mechanic usually works like this:

  1. Read all codes and freeze frame data.
  2. Inspect the air filter, the filter housing and the hoses to the throttle body.
  3. Clean the sensor with a cleaner made for it, and check the connector, power supply and earth.
  4. On a test drive, compare the sensor readings at different engine speeds with the specified values.

Notes by make

Volkswagen
Some Volkswagens have a metal mesh screen ahead of the air filter that can clog and cause wrong sensor readings.

Other ways the code is written

Scan tools and workshop printouts sometimes show the code with extra characters:

  • P010100
