When the code is set
The ECM sets a target idle speed and controls it with the throttle body or an idle air control valve. If a warm engine idles above the target range for a while, it stores P0507. Briefly higher revs after a cold start or when the air conditioning switches on are normal.
Can I keep driving?
Have it checked soon
Short trips are usually possible, but avoid longer journeys with this code and have the car checked soon. If the engine revs up on its own or you cannot stop the car reliably, do not drive on.
Symptoms
- The check engine light is on.
- High idle speed once the engine is warm.
- Revs rise and fall at idle.
- A car with an automatic gearbox pulls forward harder when stopping.
Common causes
- An air leak into the intake, including through the crankcase ventilation (PCV) system.
- A dirty or sticking throttle body.
- A faulty idle air control valve or its circuit (only on cars that have one).
- The ECM has not yet relearned the idle after the battery was disconnected or the throttle body was cleaned.
- Damaged wiring.
How to find the cause
A mechanic usually works like this:
- Read all codes and freeze frame data.
- With the engine warm, compare the actual and target idle speeds.
- Find air leaks with a smoke test or by inspecting the hoses.
- Inspect and clean the throttle body, then carry out an idle relearn following the manufacturer’s procedure.
Other ways the code is written
Scan tools and workshop printouts sometimes show the code with extra characters:

Evoca fault code diagnostics is an informational aid and does not replace a professional inspection of your vehicle. Only an inspection of the vehicle at a workshop can confirm the cause of a fault.
