When the code is set
While driving, the ECM opens the purge valve and watches how tank pressure, the mixture or engine speed respond. If the expected change does not happen, or something changes while the valve is closed, it stores P0441.
Can I keep driving?
Usually safe to drive
P0441 is usually not urgent and does not affect driving. Have it fixed at your next service. If there is a strong smell of fuel, do not wait: have the car checked straight away.
Symptoms
- The check engine light is on, often with no other symptoms.
- A faint smell of fuel.
- The car often drives completely normally.
Common causes
- A faulty canister purge valve – the most common cause.
- Cracked or disconnected hoses in the fuel vapour system.
- A blocked line or a damaged charcoal canister.
- A loose or damaged fuel cap.
- Damaged valve wiring.
How to find the cause
A mechanic usually works like this:
- Read all codes and check the fuel cap.
- Inspect the hoses and lines of the fuel vapour system.
- Test the purge valve and how it is controlled.
- Use a smoke test to find a leak or blockage.
Other ways the code is written
Scan tools and workshop printouts sometimes show the code with extra characters:
